1 Huge Reason Why You Shouldn’t Buy Any Base Model M2 MacBook



If you want faster storage, you will have to pay more for the 512GB version.

The hotly anticipated first version of the M2 MacBook Air / MacBook Pro has finally arrived and on most part, reviews have been great.  

The MagSafe is back so you have an extra 2 USB-C ports available use for storage, peripherals or external monitors.

Battery is excellent, all day power usage without the need to charge until you get back home (majority most case users).

Blazing quick multi-core performances and a beautifully designed laptop, but the question remains…

Should you buy the base Apple M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro?

A ton of reviewers have been testing the speeds of the new Apple M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro and to most people’s recommendation the M2 Mac Book Air base model shouldn’t be the model you purchase.

The 256GB base storage on the new Apple M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro is almost 50% slower in read speeds than the 512GB version and 30-15% slower in write speeds.

This wouldn’t be so much of an issue if you could just upgrade the storage in the base M2 Mac Book Air MacBook Pro after purchasing it, but it’s not really easily upgradeable.

Instead, it would be advisable to buy the 512GB Apple MacBook Air / 512GB MacBook Pro model instead of the 256GB version.

But why is the base model so much slower?

Even though both models have the same amount of RAM, the 512GB version of the Apple M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro has two NAND flash chips which allow for nearly twice as fast speed access.

What about the Apple M1 256GB MacBook models? You would be in correct in guessing that all 256GB Apple M1 Mac Products are faster in storage speeds than the base model M2 MacBooks with 256GB.

As previously stated, all 512GB models have 2 x 256GB NAND flash chips and the 256GB version of the Apple M1 MacBooks have 2 x 128GB NAND flash chips, making it considerably faster for some tasks and applications.

Both Apple’s M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro should have followed suit from the previous M1 models.

It has also been reported that the M2 MacBook Air 256GB models are slower in read speeds than a 2019 Intel Mac Book and a Surface Go that starts at £529 / $599. Now that is pretty incredible.

Is the base model M2 MacBook Air good enough to use?

As standard power user the base model for the Apple M2 MacBook Air / M2 MacBook Pro is absolutely fine to use, where read and write speeds will not have a massive impact.

Browsing the web, watching YouTube videos and general work on documents and spreadsheets will no doubt be fast and snappy.

When you require to do some video or image editing, this is when you will see significant slow downs with the base model Apple M2 MacBook Air.

Some reviewers have noticed a massive 20 seconds to swap windows / applications from Premiere Pro to Photoshop, which doesn’t sound too bad, but when you want to get work done, this can be a real pain.

If you work with a lot of documents where you have to transfer files from place to another, again, this would be slower than the 512GB version of any MacBook.

If you wanted to save some money and still have an Apple MacBook that is faster than most Windows laptops, then you could still opt for the Apple M1 MacBook Air for just £999.

Apple have now responded to The Verge about the slower 25GB M2 MacBook base models in which it responded to the speculations over the MacBook Air and Pro benchmarks.

“These new systems use a new higher density NAND that delivers 256 GB storage using a single chip and benchmarks might show a difference in performance, but the laptops will be faster and better when it comes to real-world activities.”


Take that how you would like, but not having 2 x NAND flash chips for the 256GB base models when they were present in the M1 25GB MacBooks is rather disappointing.
