Google Pixel Phones to receive critical Android May updates that make life easier.

Google has recently released the Android 13 May security patch, which is now available for a range of Pixel devices including the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro. This update aims to fix 18 security issues present in Android 13, ranging from moderate to high vulnerabilities. Google announced via Twitter that they have rolled out the May update on time, despite experiencing some delays in the past two months. The update will be available over the next week.

According to a recent tweet from the company, the May software update for supported Pixel phones running Android13 has started rolling out today and will continue over the next week. The update comes with a range of improvements, including enhancements to touch screen response and the user interface.

Small changes make a big difference.

Small changes can often make a big difference, and this is certainly the case with the latest quality-of-life update that is coming to the Pixel OS. In a future version of the operating system, the volume controls for ringtones and notifications will be separated, allowing for greater customization and control over your device.

While this may seem like a basic change, it is actually a very useful one. Currently, users can adjust the volume for media and alarms separately, but not for ringtones and notifications. This means that if you receive a lot of notifications, your ringtone volume can be drowned out and you may miss important calls. With this new feature, however, you can choose to silence notifications while still allowing your phone calls to ring loud and clear.

According to the original Google IssueTracker post requesting this change, it has been in the works for about a year and a half. The thread shows that many users were eager for this change, but Google did not initially see it as a high priority. However, the company eventually decided to implement it due to its popularity among users.

Android 13 Update

The Android 13 update has brought about a number of changes for Pixel users. Among these changes, the May 2023 update includes various bug fixes and improvements. For example, the touchscreen response on the Pixel 7 Pro has been improved in certain conditions. Additionally, the update addresses an issue that was occasionally causing lock screen UI elements to overlap with the home screen launcher interface, providing a smoother and more seamless experience for users.

Google typically begins distributing updates on the first Monday of each month while releasing the Android Security Bulletin, detailing solutions for vulnerabilities in Android. However, this month’s bulletin is divided into two patch levels, namely May 1 and May 5. This split is notable as it enables phone OEMs to more readily integrate these fixes into their monthly patches. The May 1 patch level incorporates 16 patches for generic vulnerabilities present in the Android system and framework, while the May 5 patch level addresses 29 vendor-specific vulnerabilities. This distinction between the two patch levels streamlines the patching process and makes it easier to address security issues on Android devices.

A total of 47 vulnerabilities, classified as high and moderate severity, have been successfully resolved. These fixes reinforce the security measures of Pixel phones and address potential exploits that may have caused harm to the devices. These changes are examples of how Google is constantly working to improve its products and services to establish standing in the Andriod Smartphone Market. While these may seem like a small tweak, they will make a big difference in the everyday lives of many users. This kind of attention to detail and responsiveness to user feedback is what sets Google apart from its competitors and ensures that its products remain user-friendly and intuitive.

Android 14 launch: What to expect

It appears that an Android 14 launch may be on the horizon, as suggested by the current state of the development cycle. Android Police has uncovered evidence supporting this notion, as they have found that two sliders have already been enabled in an early Android 14 build. Furthermore, in this build, they have found that setting the Pixel phone to vibrate will result in the muting of both volumes.

Google’s upcoming event, Google IO 2023 (anticipated to take place on May 10), is expected to provide us with a comprehensive preview of Android 14 ahead of its official launch later this summer. In addition to new features, the operating system is anticipated to introduce some quality-of-life enhancements and bolster device security. It remains to be seen if the slider changes will be included in this package or if they will be revealed alongside the highly anticipated Pixel 7a phone. With the event only a week away, we’ll soon find out. If you’re planning to upgrade, TechRadar has recently compiled a list of the best deals for both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Update your Pixel phone

To update your Pixel phone, the OTA update is currently being deployed and will prompt users to download and install it once it is available for their device. Google recommends that users verify their Android version and update it to the latest software for better performance. This can be done by navigating to Settings > System > System update, then tapping on the Check for update button.
