Ready, Set, Game – PlayStation Plus Members receive a surprise bonus game

This month, PlayStation Plus subscribers for both PS4 and PS5 received a pleasant surprise when the indie game Anodyne was added to their collection for free. However, only subscribers with PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium can access this game, as these subscriptions offer added benefits at a higher cost than the standard PS Plus Essential tier.

PlayStation has just unveiled its exciting lineup of free games for April 2023, exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in this month’s lineup are three amazing games: Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Tails of Iron. These games are accessible to subscribers across all PS Plus tiers, including Essential, Extra, and Deluxe/Premium, from April 4th to May 1st.

One of the standout games in the lineup is Meet Your Maker, a first-person shooter game that combines elements of building and raiding to create an immersive gaming experience. This game will be launching on the same day as its PS Plus release and is exclusively available to subscribers. Both PS4 and PS5 users can enjoy these games and add them to their collections for free during the specified time frame.

Anodyne by Analgesic Productions

Anodyne, developed by Analgesic Productions, was not initially announced as part of April’s PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium games. The reasons for its availability to subscribers at no extra cost remain unclear, but it’s undoubtedly a delightful bonus for gamers who enjoy exploring unique and surreal game worlds.

Although Anodyne received mixed reviews from critics upon its initial release in 2013, with Metacritic scores ranging from 70 to 75, depending on the platform, players have responded positively to the game. On Steam, 86% of 776 user reviews are positive, indicating a favourable reception from the gaming community.

Anodyne, developed by Analgesic Productions, is a one-of-a-kind game that combines elements of Zelda with its own unique style. Players can explore surreal, creepy, and abstract-themed areas in the subconscious of the protagonist, Young, in both nature-themed and urban-themed settings. The game beautifully renders its 16-bit-era graphics, and its moody, dream-like soundtrack perfectly complements the visuals. The game offers challenging gameplay, where players navigate through Game Boy-styled dungeons. Players collect mysterious keys and cards, and interact with peculiar characters in their quest to delve deeper into the dream world.

While it is unclear how long the game will be available to PS Plus subscribers, it is a limited-time offer. For those without PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium subscriptions, the game is available for purchase at a reasonable price of $1.99.

Fans of Anodyne should definitely check out its sequel, Anodyne 2: Return to Dust, which Analgesic Productions released in 2019. While it has garnered slightly higher critical and user review scores than the original, it is not currently available through PS Plus. The free game bonus offered to PlayStation Plus subscribers is an excellent perk for those with Extra or Premium subscriptions. It could serve as an incentive for Essential subscribers to consider upgrading to access more games and benefits. If you have yet to try Anodyne, the game is definitely worth your attention, especially if you enjoy exploring unique and surreal game worlds
