As the next generation of Wear OS smartwatches require it, Qualcomm says a new chip for Wear OS smartwatches is ‘coming soon’

The next generation of Wear OS smartwatches will require a new processor. And Qualcomm appears to be gearing up for its next release. Qualcomm hinted at the prospect in a Twitter video, stating that its next Snapdragon smartwatch chip is “coming soon.”

Qualcomm has been involved in the smartwatch market since Wear OS was referred to as Android Wear. To date, the company’s Snapdragon Wear range has developed three processors. And they have been the go-to solution for the vast majority of Wear OS products.

Following the announcement of Samsung and Google’s partnership on Wear OS 3 last summer, Qualcomm stated that a new processor will be released within the next year. Qualcomm appears to be following through on that promise, but we have no clue when it will be available.

Several Wear OS watches are powered by Snapdragon chips. But only a small number of watches, notably the costly Montblanc Summit 3 and the TicWatch Pro 3, included its most latest one, the Wear 4100 series. The 4100 has been on the market for roughly two years, and Wear OS smartwatches are ready for an upgrade.

According to rumors, the forthcoming Qualcomm 5100 and 5100 Plus chips would be created using Samsung’s 4-nanometer (nm) technology. In comparison to the Exynos W920’s 5nm process and the Apple Watch Series 7 chip’s 7nm technology, the smaller form factor may result in longer battery life and greater efficiency. If accurate, this would be a significant shift from the 12nm technology utilised by the Wear 4100 and 4100 Plus.
