Twitter’s new regulation will tackle the threat of Advanced AI Bot Swarms taking over the platform. Poll voting will also be restricted to Verified Users.

On Monday evening, CEO Elon Musk announced that Twitter’s new policy would require users to have a verified account in order to be recommended on the For You page from April 15th. This move comes after Twitter promised to overhaul its “legacy” verification system at the beginning of April. Musk earlier introduced Twitter Blue, a paid feature that costs $8 per month and includes blue verification and other features.

The new policy will recommend only company, government entities, and Twitter Blue subscribers to people who do not follow them. Musk clarified on Tuesday that accounts that users already follow will still appear on the For You page since they have explicitly requested to see their content.

The latest announcement came just after Elon Musk estimated the company’s current value at $20 billion, which is less than half of the $44 billion he paid for the social media site just five months before. According to US news outlets, Twitter Inc. employees will get stock awards based on a valuation of around $20 billion, Musk stated in an email.

Elon Musk expressed his optimism for the future of the social media company in a statement to the team. According to the Wall Street Journal, he stated, “I see a clear, although tough, route to a >$250B valuation,” indicating that shares awarded now would be worth 10 times more.

How will this policy help?

According to Musk, this new regulation in Twitter is required to deal with the problem of highly advanced AI bot swarms seizing control of the platform. Also, as a result of this change, only verified accounts will have the ability to cast votes in polls, underscoring Twitter’s commitment to preventing fraudulent activity on the site. Musk tweeted that “Starting April 15th, only verified accounts will be eligible to be in “For You” recommendations. This is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle. Voting in polls will require verification for the same reason,”

Twitter’s decision to give verified accounts higher priority in its recommendation system may significantly affect users, particularly those who depend on the For You page to find new content. Whether this new regulation will successfully address the problem of bot swarms and enhance the general user experience on the site is still up in the air.

It’s important to approach the recent announcement from Elon Musk with some scepticism. While Musk has a reputation for making bold promises, his track record when it comes to following through on those promises can be a bit mixed. For instance, in February of this year, he indicated that Tesla was planning to share ad revenue with Blue subscribers. However, despite his assertion, this has yet to come to fruition. Similarly, he also promised to make the company’s algorithm open-source by March 5th, which didn’t happen. However, he now says that it will occur on March 31st, even though he didn’t acknowledge the previously missed deadline.
