YouTube has established itself as a vital component of many people’s everyday life as one of the most widely used social media sites. The network has more than 2 billion active users each month and has developed into a global hub for watchers and producers of video content.The platform uses the algorithm to determine which videos to recommend to users based on their viewing history and preferences. But what if YouTube didn’t use an algorithm?

Why would Youtube not have an algorithm?

After expressing general concern over the unintended consequences of allowing websites to be held liable for the user content they automatically recommend in the Gonzalez v. Google case, the Supreme Court’s justices made a decision. The court’s decision on where to draw that line might have a big impact on how websites decide to rank, show, and market material to their users in the future.

The attorneys for Google, the US government, and the family of Nohemi Gonzalez, (an American student killed in an ISIS attack in Paris in 2015), were grilled by the nine justices for nearly three hours on how the court could craft a ruling that exposes harmful content recommendations to liability while still protecting innocent ones. The federal law known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—a component of the Telecommunications Act of 1996—which shields online services from liability for the content posted by users of their platforms—is the key legal issue in the case. However, if the group of lawyers attempting to hold Google liable for suggesting YouTube videos made by terrorist organisations succeed, it might mean an end to Youtube algorithm reign.

Will it be able to survive?

Well, to answer this question, we need to first understand what the algorithm does. YouTube’s algorithm uses a variety of factors, such as watch time, engagement, and video quality, to determine which videos to recommend to users. This means that users are more likely to see content that aligns with their interests and viewing habits, leading to increased engagement and user satisfaction.

However, if YouTube had no algorithm, the platform would look very different. Without an algorithm, users would first have to rely on search and manual browsing to find the content they are interested in. This could result in a more diverse range of content being surfaced, as users would be exposed to a wider range of creators and topics. This could also make it more difficult for users to find the videos they are most interested in, as there would be no personalized recommendations based on their viewing history.

The idea of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) would not be possible on YouTube without an algorithm. SEO is the practice of optimising a website or content to rank higher in search engine results. If there were no algorithms, users could just browse submitted content to locate what they were looking for, eliminating the need for artists to optimise their videos for search results.

Struggling Content Creators:

The distribution of views and engagement would probably be considerably more erratic and random in the absence of an algorithm. The performance of their videos or whether viewers would recommend them would be completely unknown to the creators. This would mean that the content creators would find it difficult to gain exposure and grow their audience, as they would have to rely solely on organic search results and word-of-mouth promotion.

The Content creators would face most of the challenges in promoting their videos. Creators will rely on their own marketing efforts to get their content seen by audiences without personalized recommendations, creators . This could lead to a concentration of views and engagement around the most popular creators, making it difficult for new creators to gain traction on the platform.

More abuse

The absence of an algorithm could also lead to a more chaotic and unpredictable platform. Without an algorithm to prioritize content, users could be inundated with irrelevant or low-quality videos, making it difficult to find high-quality content. It would be difficult to detect and remove spam, hate speech, or other harmful content, making the platform much more vulnerable to abuse.

How would Youtube lose without an algorithm?

Lower revenue:

 It is interesting to note that it’s YouTube’s algorithm which plays a key role in the platform’s monetization strategy. The algorithm suggests relevant ads to users based on their viewing history and behavior, which helps YouTube target ads to users who are most likely to engage with them. Without an algorithm, YouTube may struggle to target ads effectively, resulting in lower ad revenue.

Moreover, users may spend less time on the platform and view fewer videos, resulting in lower overall ad impressions. This could lead to a decrease in revenue for YouTube and its content creators.

Limited growth:

YouTube’s algorithm has been a key factor in the platform’s growth, as it has helped users discover new content and creators. Without an algorithm, YouTube may struggle to attract new users and grow its user base.

As such, it is unlikely that YouTube would ever do without an algorithm but it is pretty clear that it plays a critical role in shaping the user experience on the platform.
